What to Expect for the Alaska Fishing Industry in 2018

Alaska’s fishing industry is the primary industry in the state of Alaska. Not only is this industry the primary revenue source for the state, but Alaska’s fishing industry also supplies our nation’s food chain with fresh fish. This being the case, industry officials closely monitor a variety of circumstances that will impact the industry overall. In a recent report in The Anchorage Daily News, they provided an update of what we can expect for Alaska’s fishing industry in 2018, particularly the Sockeye Salmon.

2018 EXPECTATIONS

It is expected that the Sockeye Salmon in Bristol Bay will be huge in 2018. Last year’s run of sockeye was one of the largest ever and it is expected that 2018 will be even bigger. Officials believe the warmer winters are providing better conditions for baby salmon. The warmth offers extra growing time in the lakes making them bigger, stronger and more competitive once they get to the ocean.

In addition to this report, each year, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game releases a detailed report of Commercial Fisheries. This report offers a list of individual reports on the types of fish as well as the areas within the state that are fished.

While the sockeye salmon run is expected to be one of the best in 2018, the Pink Salmon run is expected to be less robust in 2018 based on the most recent forecasts.
The Togiak Herring is another run that is expected to see quite a boom in 2018. It yielded approximately 90, 269 tons in 2017 and is forecasted to yield 136,756 tons in 2018.
These are just predictions for each of these runs, however, the methods used have been quite consistent and reliable over the years, so we expect the actual results to be quite close to the predictions.

Predictions for other fisheries are expected to be released in the coming weeks but these are the ones available right now. Judging from these reports, it looks like the 2018 season will be a good one.

As always, Alaska Air Forwarding will be ready to support the 2018 fishing season in Alaska. We’ve been supporting this industry since the beginning and we continue to provide efficient and timely shipping to support Alaska’s most important and profitable industry.
