Touring Alaska: Second Stop-Anchorage

Welcome back to our Touring Alaska blog series. If you missed the first installment of this series, you can check it out right here. Today we plan to make our second stop on the tour in the city of Anchorage.

SECOND STOP: ANCHORAGE

Anchorage, Alaska is the state’s largest city with a population of 297, 483 (2017) in the municipal area. However, when we factor in the population of the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the population jumps to 401,649.
Anchorage is located in the south-central part of the state near the Cook Inlet, making it a very strategically located city. It is equal distance from such major cities as New York, Frankfurt and Tokyo and is about a 9 ½ hour flight to 90% of the industrialized world. The Anchorage International Airport is a regular re-fueling stop for many international cargo flights.

THINGS TO DO IN ANCHORAGE

There is no lack of things to do in and around the city of Anchorage. The city offers numerous restaurants as well as theatre, concerts and museums, so if you’re more of an indoor person, you will find plenty to entertain you in the city of Anchorage. However, for those who love the outdoors, Anchorage offers even more. The state of Alaska holds more than half of the nation’s park lands and Anchorage is central to much of it. The above map shows the close proximity of the city of Anchorage to Denali National Park. Denali boasts the tallest peak on the continent along with a booming wildlife population of moose, caribou, black bears, wolves and more. Flight-seeing excursions leave daily from Anchorage allowing visitors to explore this incredible national park that is literally in the city’s back yard.

Anchorage also offers easy access to the numerous Alaska glaciers. We’ve likely mentioned this before, but we think it’s worth repeating: Alaska is home to the nation’s greatest concentration of glaciers. There are a total of 60 glaciers within a 50 mile radius of Anchorage.

Other activities to enjoy are dog sledding, kayaking, hiking and camping, just to name a few. Visit Anchorage Alaska is a great resource when planning your trip to the city. You’ll find there are countless things to do no matter what time of the year you may travel to Anchorage.
